The Skagit Valley Tulip Festival runs the whole of April, but the flowers keep their own calendar — a warm March pulls the bloom forward, a cold one pushes it into May. The growers post daily bloom maps and we read them the morning we drive.
Roozengaarde and Tulip Town are the two display gardens; the commercial fields around them are the real spectacle, laid out in blocks of solid colour under the Cascades.

- Weekday mornings. The weekend traffic on Highway 20 is famous and not in a good way.
- Daffodils come first, in March, and the crowds do not.
- Wear boots you do not mind. It is a working farm and April in Washington is wet.
