Space Needle
605 feet of 1962 optimism, with a glass floor added in 2018 that most people cannot make themselves stand on.
The Needle went up for the 1962 Century 21 Exposition on a plot the organisers bought for $75,000 and built in about four hundred days. It was the tallest thing west of the Mississippi when it opened. The lift takes forty-one seconds.
The 2018 renovation replaced the observation deck walls with floor-to-ceiling glass and put a rotating glass floor on the level below. If you are doing the Needle, book a timed ticket before your day — walk-up slots in July can be three hours out, which is the whole afternoon gone.
