Leavenworth
Two and a quarter hours over the Cascades, and completely committed to the idea.
The railway moved its depot in the 1920s, the sawmill closed, and by 1960 Leavenworth was dying. A civic committee decided to rebuild the whole town centre in Bavarian style — every façade, every sign, including the petrol station and the supermarket. It is either the most charming thing in the state or the strangest, and it draws well over a million visitors a year.
The drive is half the day: over Stevens Pass, down the Tumwater Canyon along the Wenatchee River. In December the Christmas lighting festival makes the town genuinely beautiful and the traffic genuinely difficult.

- Winter weekends the town is at capacity by eleven. We start early and park once.
- The route back via Blewett Pass is longer but prettier if you have the time.
