The bridge was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1935 and crosses the strait between Whidbey and Fidalgo islands 180 feet up. The tide forces Puget Sound through a gap a few hundred feet wide, so the water below churns and stands in visible standing waves twice a day.
You can walk the bridge footway — narrow, windy, and not for anyone unhappy with heights — and there are beaches and forest trails on both sides.
