Smith Tower
Tallest building west of the Mississippi from 1914 until the Space Needle went up in 1962.
L. C. Smith — of Smith Corona typewriters — built it in 1914 and it held the western height record for nearly fifty years. The lifts are still the original brass-doored, manually operated cars, run by an operator.
The 35th-floor observatory has an open-air deck and a bar dressed as a Prohibition speakeasy. It is a smaller, quieter, more characterful view than the Needle, and it looks out at Pioneer Square and the port rather than the other way round.
