Alki Beach
A two-and-a-half mile beach in West Seattle that looks straight back across the bay at downtown.
The Denny Party came ashore here in November 1851 and named the place New York Alki — Chinook Jargon for 'by and by'. The ambition was optimistic; the settlement moved across to what is now Pioneer Square within a year.
Today it is the closest thing Seattle has to a beach town, and the reason to come is the reverse view: the whole skyline, laid out across the water, with the Olympics behind you.
